Dental Crowns Melbourne - Restore Function Of Your Tooth

A dental crown or tooth cap is a tooth-shaped, custom-made cap that is encased over a tooth. Most common in cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns help to restore a tooth to its original size and shape which also protects and strengthens the tooth structure.

Many patients opt for dental crowns to help improve the overall look and health of a tooth as they resemble natural teeth. Dental crowns can be made from different materials, but porcelain is the most common type as it is a durable material that will last. At Prodental, our crowns are made to match the shape, size, and colour of your teeth. Giving you a natural, long-lasting smile.

Are Dental Crowns Right for Me?

As with all cosmetic dental treatments, a consultation with our dental team will ensure that the tooth can be fitted with a dental crown. You may consider a dental crown for issues like:

  • Restoring broken, cracked, chipped, or fractured teeth
  • Protecting and strengthening a weak tooth
  • Decaying tooth/teeth
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Covering large or fractured fillings
  • The tooth has had a root canal treatment

Dental crowns offer both cosmetic enhancement and protection of your teeth and will change the look of your smile. Your dentist will conduct a full assessment of your teeth to determine whether your teeth need a crown.

Process and Recovery Time

A patient will need two visits to have a dental crown fitted. During the first visit, the dentist will examine the tooth to ensure that the damaged tooth can be fitted with a tooth cap. If the tooth is severely damaged, a filling may be required prior preparing the tooth for the crown.
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth. The tooth is cleaned by removing any decay and the surface of the tooth is shaped for a proper fitting. A mould or several moulds are taken of the tooth that will be used to create your custom-made crown. Your tooth is then fitted with a temporary cap that will stay on your tooth until your second appointment.

During your second visit, the temporary cap is removed and your new dental crown is placed onto the tooth. After the cap is fitted, we check the bite to ensure you are biting properly.

Your dentist will give home care instructions on how to look after your dental crown along with regular check-ups. With a good oral care routine, your crown can last well over 15 years, allowing you to smile more often.
